Introduction
As we enter this multifaceted era, it is important to have a space that is rich in public consciousness as a means to opening doors for future changes. By allowing ever greater number of people to participate in it, this space would in turn become even more culturally diverse. Let arts be this new space for public forum. Let art appreciation be the new public psyche that replaces the old mindset based on group awareness. The old mindset was all about citizenship awareness derived from politics and sociology and its focus was on groups. Now, we need a new mindset based on cultural citizenship. With sufficient art events, we can cultivate this new dimension. This leads us to this question: how to use art displays in public space to provide visual aesthetics and at the same time enhance the level of art awareness among common people.
Name Sculpture " Sign Me " emphasizes the spirit of sharing: As soon as someone intentionally writes down his or her name, he or she is making a statement that “I am so and so” with conviction and promise. In a way, this is similar to the “I CAN” spirit in graffiti art. Spirits like these establish people’s bonds to the world and organize the world at large. In addition, it is only when people are willing to participate in and pay attention to the aesthetics of their surrounding that they would truly care for the well being of their environment in the long term. Furthermore, a sculpture piece provides a means for actionable feedback for viewers’ imagination. This breaks the master-slave relationship in art appreciation because a viewer’s perception of the world leads to an action that forms a new world. Name signing allows the names of viewers to weave a new dress of the world. The act of signing names is a small step in self-actualization for people. This exemplifies the idea that art embraces the crowd and the crowd embraces the world.
