Purpose of Sign Me
Sign Me- Name Sculpture is a project by Alixe Fu to bring large white sculptures on a tour and invite prospective viewers to sign their names on these sculptures. It is an attempt by the artist to realize the concept of object relativism in existentialism. In other terms, it is similar to the concept of blank in Eastern Art and to the idea of rest in music. These blank sculptures represent uncertain human visual cognition and viewers are invited to instantaneously and momentarily become a creator by leaving a feedback of their subjective experience right on the sculptures. In aggregate, signing is a collective art and a manifestation of alternative thinking.
Sign Me-Name Sculpture invites anyone who chance encounters one of the sculptures on display to leave her/his name on the piece. This avoids the “myth” that artists are self-indulgent. Instead, the world shapes everyone and everyone shapes the world. By signing one’s unique name on the work piece, a viewer suddenly swaps her/his role with that of the artist.
Allowing an art piece to be signed by viewers is an unusual activity. This unusual action induces self-awareness and self-awakening. Just as consciousness requires constant decision making, there is little consciousness without this feedback via signing. With signatures spreading all over it, this work piece is decorated with diverse symbolic expressions from individuals. As the pieces travel to different places, the collective symbols on them also morph into something alien. This is akin to the process of life in general – the imprints we leave in our lives depend on how we traverse our own journeys.
