“One kind of rice feeds a hundred different people”.

A sculpture signed by everybody. Alixe FU stressed that, according to the concept of Reincarnation in Asian culture, a person owes her/his existence to all of those who preceded her/him in life.

Impact Analysis

1A. Auvers-sur-Oise, France
The French City of Auvers-sur-Oise is an internationally renowned location for arts. The French Ministry of Culture has set up VanGogh International Art Village (Cité Van Gogh) and Gallery of Contemporary Art here. For impressionists such as Pissaro and Cézanne, among others, it was also a favorite place for making drawings. To reflect this, the Château d’Auvers has been turned into a visual art museum for impressionists. Additionally, because Daubigny, a master in Barbizon School, had a studio here, the City opened a museum to house a rich collection of his works.

This project will begin on French National Heritage Day in 2008. National Heritage Day is an important annual French cultural holiday during which the public has free access to national art galleries and museums. This day is the highlight of the autumn art season. The City of Auvers has invited Alixe Fu, originally from Taiwan, to carry out Name Sculpture activity. As an artist, he is a citizen of the international community. Organized in collaboration with the City, this exhibition will attract international media attention that benefits art lovers all over the world.

1B. Beijing
Beijing’s Cube Museum of Art is located in the area of Chaoyang Liquor Factory and 798 Art Zone. This site is chosen because it is an area that attracts art lovers. With the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, this area is bound to attract many new international art connoisseurs who can finally come to satisfy their curiosity after China opens up.

1C. Taipei
The Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei is at the formal site of Taipei City Hall. The building itself occupies the public square portion of the formal city hall. Gone is the crowd that comes and goes for official business. Instead, it is now an art square. Together with the nearby Chung Shan transit station, they form a pedestrian art zone. Name Sculpture activity brings city dwellers’ attention closer to the living space. A casual stroll down the square allows a pedestrian to feel the dimension, texture, and emotions conveyed by the semi-surreal human sculptures. Taipei is the last stop of the tour. Activity archives from Taipei, along with those from France and Beijing, will be made public.

2. A Sculpture in Action The entire process of this project, including the exhibition, promotion, and archiving, is a new exhibition concept. No longer is the exhibition confined to the white walls of museums or the pedestals in public squares. Instead, this entire process can be viewed as a piece of art in action, thereby breaking the mold of traditional sculpture exhibitions.

3. Merging of Artwork and Viewers
As viewers sign their names on a white sculpture, their individualized symbols are spread all over the surface of the piece. Consequently, viewers become part of the collective memory in the work itself. This concept is a new chapter in the art of sculpture. Eventually, the sculpture will be painted with colors and put on display around the world.
