I held my first solo exhibition in 1983, and I painted a large piece of 720x540 cm painting that was hung like a poster outside of a building, and because of it, many people were drawn to see the exhibition. At that time, my work was highly experimental. One piece of work was hung at the gallery’s entrance, and it is the original version of the poster, and visitors could sign on this work. Many people did sign on the piece, and the signatures have thus become a part of the artwork; however, I forgot to sign my own name on it, and hence, I often wondered who the real artist is?
In 1987, before I went to France, I held many solo exhibitions in Taiwan, which helped me to successfully become an artist resident in France and to work in Paris’ Auvers s/Oise; these journeys guided me to step on to the path of working professionally as an artist. In the catalogue of the exhibition, the artist statement stated that “I am a single mind among the people like a dot among the dust. Sense every consciousness floating by me, listen to the earnest voice comes from the depth of my heart. I am every one, but also no one. Like a play, shifting myself from one point to another, melting myself with others, passing the spark of the massage to others. I merely keep what touches me at different time in different spaces.” I’ve then traveled to many cities to reside and to show my artworks, and have also lived a period of personal hedonism, a Saint-Denise period, a Crusader period, a birth period, a reincarnation period, and to the latter red eye period. In my twenty years of artistic career, I have expressed my emotions toward people’s quest, encounter, lost, and love based on my instincts, and the psychological layers of the conscious and the subconscious have been depicted, where the perspectives of time of the past and present have been transfixed. What I care about are the life issues of philosophy and artistic creativity. “Sign Me: Name Sculpture – An International Sculpture Coloring Art Endeavor” is a highly experimental creative action, where people of different cultures, religions, and social statuses of the east and the west can come together to partake in a communal art.
My sculptures and paintings are in accordance with each other, and even my creative attitude is a form of artist medium that transmits the inner visuals of the spirit. My soul is enriched by the public through their emotions and vitality, and the enrichments offer me boundless resources. In the journey of art, I’ve received many supports from my peer and elders, and without others’ professional aid, it would have been impossible for me to complete my work. The presentation of the group work and artistic concept of “Sign Me” announces that the ones taking part in this art endeavor are also the creators, and the attempt is to try to break the myth that “I” am the solitary creator of the work.
Paris’s romantic vibes come from its ambiance and humanity. During my initial stay in Paris, I often had to transport large pieces of works to the Grand Palais via the subway in order to participate in various exhibitions. Transporting large pieces of works in the Paris subway caused quite a stir-up, and people responded differently by being shocked, perplexed, or with curiosity and a smile. There were also the beautiful experiences when some people were pleasantly surprised. Art being in the crowd and stepping into life have become issues that I’ve focused on. On September 11th, 2008, I was invited to create an unprecedented large scale mobile art for Auvers-sur-Oise, an art location in Paris, where VanGogh lived and is buried in. The autumn exhibition of “Sign Me: Name Sculpture – An International Sculpture Coloring Art Endeavor” includes 99 artworks shown indoors, and 17 white sculptures varying from 2~4 meters installed on various public locations, such as at the Château d’Auvers, international artist village, contemporary art gallery, Manoir des Colombières of the Daubigny Museum, VanGogh Park, and Civic Hall square. Everyone that has chance encountered these white sculptures are all invited to sign on the pieces.
“Sign Me” is art that is open to the public, and it is transmitting a message of peace and globalization.
The world shapes everyone and everyone also shapes the world. The signing gesture breaks the distance between the public and the artist, and amidst the crossing times and spaces, we are observing people, the sculptures’ multiple faces, and the demand for a harmonized world. The artist’s work being signed by the public perhaps also brings another self-recognition and examination. “Sign Me” has begun in Auvers-sur-Oise, and will continue in different countries, and the dialogue between the work and the people will continue to profoundly transform. The Chinese saying says that “One kind of rice feeds a hundred different people”.
The sculptures signed by different people emphasize that according to the concept of Reincarnation in Asian culture, a person owes her/his existence to all of those who preceded her/him in life. This is a world of participation and sharing.
